This film is set against the backdrop of the "first contact" event between Earth humans and the Vulcans, focusing on the arch-nemesis 'Borg' from the television series 'Star Trek: The Next Generation'. While the Enterprise is on a routine patrol in space, Captain Picard receives a coded message stating that the Borg have allied with forces from other star systems to prepare an attack on Earth. Due to Captain Picard's previous capture and assimilation by the enemy, Starfleet does not fully trust him and therefore does not send him to battle. Ignoring orders, Picard participates in the fight, after which the Enterprise follows the Borg's time vortex back to the 21st century to prevent the Borg from attempting to alter humanity's extraterrestrial developmental history to conquer Earth.
