Jack (played by Jack Nicholson) is a writer. One winter, he got a job overseeing a mountaintop hotel. This was perfect for Jack, as he could have a quiet place to write. So Jack moved in with his wife and son. During the winter, heavy snow blocked the roads, and the mountaintop hotel was left with only the three of them. From the moment they moved in, Jack's wife Wendy (played by Shelley Duvall) noticed that the atmosphere was strange, and Jack's son Danny (played by Danny Lloyd) often saw people he didn’t recognize, but there was no one else there besides their family. Meanwhile, Jack not only spent all day writing but also his temper became increasingly odd. Until one day, Wendy discovered that her husband had been writing only one phrase for days: Jack is mad!
