This film chronicles the epic and legendary life of India's Mahatma Gandhi. In 1893, 24-year-old Gandhi (played by Ben Kingsley) was invited to South Africa to work as a lawyer, where he resolved to lead Indian immigrants in a non-violent protest movement, which resulted in his imprisonment. After his release, Gandhi returned to his homeland, establishing a monastery in the Champaran region, joining the Indian National Congress-led independence movement, and promoting the philosophy of non-violent resistance. During the movement, Gandhi was imprisoned four times; due to his relentless efforts and the leadership of the Congress, Indian independence was finally brought to the agenda, and Gandhi attended the Round Table Conference in London in 1931 to discuss independence. However, as the prospect of independence loomed nearer, the religious tensions between Muslims and Hindus in India became increasingly pronounced, presenting a new and severe challenge to Gandhi's philosophy of non-violent resistance... This film won the 1982 Academy Award for Best Picture, Best Director (Richard Attenborough), Best Actor (Ben Kingsley), Best Original Screenplay, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, and Best Editing, and received three nominations for Best Makeup, Best Film Score, and Best Sound.
