The story takes place in the 19th century South Asian subcontinent, where Danny (played by Sean Connery) and Billy (played by Michael Caine) do not rush back to their homeland after completing their military service. They discover an ancient kingdom called Kaffirstan, inhabited entirely by uncivilized natives. Danny and Billy are confident that they can use their intelligence and advanced technology to convince these savages that they were born to be the kings who rule the tribe. At first, things are not as simple as the two imagined, but a series of unexpected events gradually lead the natives to believe that the seemingly invulnerable Danny is their destined ruler and god. Thus, Danny successfully ascends to the throne, enjoying the love and admiration of his subjects. Caught up in his own success, Danny plans to marry a local beauty, only to find that this action leads him to a crisis of trust.
