When the sun reaches its highest point, its shadow disappears. Detective Han Dong-soo (played by Ha Seok-jin) becomes despondent after his son dies unexpectedly while he tries to prove his hypothesis about a concluded murder case. Fourteen years later, a murder case seems to have some connection to the case from back then, and as Han Dong-soo starts focusing on the son of a victim from that time, he unexpectedly meets a private detective who is helping a conglomerate boss investigate his fiancée, Yoo Mi-ho (played by Son Ye-jin). From the private detective, he learns that this woman named Yoo Mi-ho is the daughter of Lee Jia, who was once thought to have committed suicide out of guilt for the murders. The two children Han Dong-soo had once suspected back then have now grown up and have again appeared around him due to a murder case. During his investigation, Han Dong-soo uncovers the truth behind both the former and recent murder cases, and behind the truth lies a pair of tragic lovers who can never meet in the light of day. The film is adapted from the namesake novel 'Into the White Night' by the renowned Japanese mystery novelist Keigo Higashino. The novel was previously turned into a television drama in Japan and became a great success.
