At the end of Season 5, Piper and nine other inmates are besieged by fully armed SWAT officers, and a bloody conflict is imminent. Meanwhile, other inmates are being transported to different prisons. The story of Season 6 begins a week after the 'SWAT siege' incident, with the riot at Litchfield Prison being suppressed, and the recaptured inmates forced to adapt to new rules in a new environment. The main perpetrators of the riot are all held in the highly secured 'Litchfield Max' prison. Taystee is in the worst situation; she seeks justice for Poussey's death, but now she is formally being investigated for the deaths of Piscatella and Humphrey. The balance of power within the prison has shifted, sentences have been significantly extended, and the once vacation-like life is no more. The formerly high-ranking 'prison leader' is now a 'bottom dweller', facing abuse from other inmates as well as torment from the guards. Friendships are put to the test, and new alliances are forming—some voluntary and others forced by circumstance. Authorities are holding the inmates involved in the riot in solitary confinement and interrogating them separately, offering tempting plea deals that lead to divisions among them. Will they betray friends for self-preservation and reduced sentences, or will they uphold their friendship and maintain unity? The most pressing question now is... where is Alex?
