In 1947, Ningxia, China. The tomb of the Dragon Emperor, the first emperor of China from two thousand years ago, is excavated here. Meanwhile, in the United States, the great adventurer O'Connell (played by Brendan Fraser) and his wife Evelyn (played by Maria Bello) are invited to bring the legendary gem known as the "Eye of Shangri-La", which is said to grant eternal life, to China as a symbol of lasting friendship between the people of China and the United States. Unexpectedly, a Kuomintang officer (played by Anthony Wong) colludes with the museum curator to steal the Eye of Shangri-La on the spot, subsequently awakening an evil force from two thousand years ago—the Dragon Emperor (played by Jet Li). The Dragon Emperor not only wreaks havoc with the power of the five elements but can also transform into various monsters to torment the world. O'Connell's family fights fiercely against the Dragon Emperor and his massive army of Terracotta warriors. The thousand-year-old saintess Zi Yuan (played by Michelle Yeoh) and her daughter Lin Nai (played by Li Bingbing) also join this holy group in hopes of defeating the Dragon Emperor and restoring peace to the world.
