The British Navy's HMS Devonshire warship was sunk in Chinese territorial waters by an unidentified torpedo attack. To investigate the situation, the British Navy decided to use force and dispatched warships to retaliate in the accident area. However, this was stopped by M (played by Judi Dench), the head of secret intelligence, who sent agent 007, James Bond (played by Pierce Brosnan), to uncover the true reasons and prevent an outbreak of war between the two countries. During the ongoing investigation, media mogul Carver (played by Jonathan Pryce) came into Bond's focus. At a dinner hosted by Carver, Bond encountered his former girlfriend Paris (played by Teri Hatcher), who is now Mrs. Carver. With Paris's help, Bond was able to use GPS to redirect the British warships that had already been deployed, buying valuable time for his investigation.
