Desire of the Gods

A group of people living far from the civilized world resides on Japan's Southern Islands. The Takene family belongs to the lineage of the island's priestesses. Takene's grandfather, Yamamoto, possesses both divine and inhuman traits. The relationship between Takene and his sister, Taima, is somewhat ambiguous, yet Taima is forcibly taken as a concubine by the island's leader, Ryu Tachigen. Genta, Takene's son, longs for the civilized life of the city, vehemently detesting the customs of island life, yet he cannot break the island's entrenched traditions. The people on the island have long depended on rice farming; later, Ryu Tachigen instructed everyone to switch to sugarcane cultivation, necessitating the construction of a sugar factory. A technician from Tokyo arrived to assess the water source for the factory and proposed using a large waterfall as the water source, but faced strong opposition from the island's residents. A capitalist wants to build an airport on the island, requiring the Takene family to relocate, but Takene firmly refuses. On the eve of the god festival, Ryu Tachigen accidentally dies while abusing Taima, and Takene happens to witness it, only to be caught by Ichigen. On the night of the festival, Ichigen tells the islanders that Takene and his sister Taima killed Ryu Tachigen. A group of young men chased them in two boats, with Genta among them. They struck Takene to death with oars, while Taima was tied to the mast.
