In the 1960s and 70s, the two superpowers, the USA and the USSR, engaged in a military competition that shocked the world. To win air superiority in future space wars, both countries successively sent astronauts into outer space. The United States launched 17 spacecraft to the moon before 1972, but Apollo 18 was suddenly canceled on the eve of the flight.
