This drama is adapted from the novel of the same name by writer, science editor, and advertising copywriter Bonnie Garmus. The story takes place in the early 1950s when society widely believed that women belonged to the home rather than the professional sphere. Elizabeth Zott (played by Brie Larson) aspires to be a scientist in a male-dominated world. She works in a laboratory as an assistant to renowned scientist Calvin Evans (played by Lewis Pullman), and there is an unusual chemistry between them. However, when Elizabeth discovers she is pregnant, finds herself alone, and is fired from the lab, she puts her dreams on hold while also unlocking the unique intelligence of a single mother. Elizabeth takes a job as a host on a television cooking show, where she begins to teach neglected housewives and the suddenly attentive men of the country much more than recipes, all the while yearning to return to her true passion: science.
