Injured in battle and paralyzed from the waist down, former Navy soldier Jake Sully (played by Sam Worthington) decides to take the place of his deceased brother and operate the 'Avatar,' a hybrid biological being created by Dr. Grace Augustine (played by Sigourney Weaver) by combining human DNA with that of the local Na'vi tribe on the planet Pandora. Jake's goal is to infiltrate the Na'vi tribe and diplomatically persuade them to voluntarily leave their ancestral home, allowing SecFor Corporation to completely clear the region's primordial forests to mine the valuable 'unobtanium' beneath. During his exploration of Pandora, Jake meets the Na'vi princess Neytiri (played by Zoe Saldana), from whom he learns the survival skills of the Na'vi and their attitude towards nature. Meanwhile, the company's manager and military representative Colonel Miles Quaritch (played by Stephen Lang) gradually loses patience and decides to resort to force to drive away the Na'vi... This film was shot in 3D and cost a total of $500 million to produce and distribute, making it the most expensive film in history. It won three awards at the 82nd Academy Awards for Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, and Best Art Direction.
