The young escort Wang Zhenwei (played by Zhou Qunda) has repeatedly expressed his affection for Feiyan (played by Wu Xiaomin) without success, which frustrates him greatly. One day, while escorting goods for Chen Fu (played by Chen Jiming), he encounters Li Yuncong (played by Zhang Zhiyao). The two agree to drink at a tavern, but upon returning to the inn, they find that part of the cargo has been burned. Wang Zhenwei feels something is amiss, and after investigating, he discovers that the robbers work for Li Yuncong, which infuriates him. However, Li Yuncong provides him with another explanation. Due to the damage to the cargo, Wang Zhenwei proposes not to take the escort fee, but Chen Fu admires his courage and pays him the full fee, inviting him to be the guard for his theater "Peony Pavilion" for a month. Unexpectedly, that night, Chen Fu dies mysteriously, with no signs of poisoning or murder on his body, leaving Wang Zhenwei utterly perplexed. Determined not to let a single day ruin his brilliant future, Wang Zhenwei still takes on the responsibility of guarding the theater. Through thorough investigation, he gradually uncovers clues, and the theater's famous actress, Peony (played by Chi Huaqiong), comes into his view...
