The story takes place in a distant future, where Shaddam IV (played by José Ferrer) is the Emperor of the Universe, ruling over the entire empire with his power and military force. Despite holding great power, Shaddam IV feels insecure and believes that his cousin Duke Atreides (played by Jürgen Prochnow) is plotting to usurp his throne, thus banishing him to the distant planet of Caladan. Shaddam IV's persecution of Duke Atreides does not cease, and eventually, the duke is defeated and takes his own life, leaving his wife and son Paul (played by Kyle MacLachlan) displaced. The two escape into the vast desert, seeking help from the local natives. The natives revere Paul as their savior and ultimately, he becomes their leader, marrying a local woman named Chani (played by Sean Young). However, the flames of revenge have never been extinguished in his heart.
