The unexpected miscarriage deeply impacted John (played by Peter Sarsgaard) and Kate (played by Vera Farmiga), who were eagerly anticipating the arrival of their baby. Kate's mental state neared collapse, and their marriage was on the brink of disaster. To save their crumbling marriage, the couple went to an orphanage hoping to adopt a child. There, they met the somewhat unconventional little girl Esther (played by Isabelle Fuhrman). The unique aura that the little girl exuded attracted John and Kate, and ultimately, Esther became a member of their family.However, with Esther's arrival, a series of bizarre events followed.
