The film is adapted from the lyrical novel of the same name by K. Q. Binski. The director breaks the plot into 11 units: 'Ivan and Marichka', 'Polonina', 'Loneliness', 'Ivan and Balagna', 'Everyday Life', 'Christmas', 'Spring Tomorrow', 'Thunderstorm', 'Small Hotel', 'Ivan's Death', and 'Devout Ritual'. It tells the story of protagonist Ivan's two deeply engraved love tragedies: first, the female protagonist Marichka tragically falls into a river and dies while searching for Ivan; then, another female protagonist Balagna betrays Ivan. The story ends with Ivan dying at the hands of his rival in love. This film is a typical poetic cinema that uniquely showcases the nation's exploration of survival paths and glimpses into the activities and changes of the nation's inner consciousness. The film artistically mixes delicate documentary scenes with baroque visual effects. Through the emotional guidance of the protagonist, it employs a whirlpool narrative style that traverses between fantasy and reality. The camera seems enchanted, drawing the audience into their mysterious dreams. After its release, the film faced a ban, but was quickly lifted under pressure.
