In a coastal town in England, there live three women, all named Hester Colpitts. The elderly Hester (played by Joan Plowright), on her birthday, discovers her husband Jack (played by Bryan Pringle) openly having an affair at home, and in a fit of rage, drowns him in the bathtub while he is drunk; the 25-year-old Hester (played by Juliet Stevenson) lives a life of luxury with her husband Hardy (Trevor Cooper), but Hardy is a fat and abstinent man, leading Hester to drown him in the sea in a moment of anger; the 19-year-old swimmer Hester (played by Joely Richardson) has just married her lover Bellamy (David Morrissey), who suspects that the other two Hesters have killed their husbands, and the coroner Magritte (Bernard Hill) also gets involved. To protect her comrades, Hester drowns her husband in the pool...
