The film is adapted from the debut novel and representative work of Dutch political activist, writer, and actor Karel Glastra van Loon (December 24, 1962 – July 1, 2005), published in 1999. Armin (played by Peter Paul Muller) lives with his 13-year-old son Bo (played by Dai Carter) and a woman named Ellen (played by Halina Reijn). His wife Monica (played by Carice van Houten) was a passionate woman, but she passed away 9 years ago. Both Armin and Ellen want a child, but a test confirmed that Armin is infertile. Therefore, Bo cannot be his biological son. Disappointed and jealous, Armin starts to investigate men who were close to Monica and could potentially be Bo's father. However, the results do not yield any significant connections. By chance, he discovers a diary written by his ill father (played by Jan Decleir), which contains entries about Monica seducing his father. Armin is furious—how can he truly know and understand the ones he loves? How can he understand those closest to him? He would rather not have to face these questions at all. After his father passes away, following an inner struggle, Armin decides to give his half-brother a proper name in this new home and to care for his late father's underage son.
