During the Warring States period in Japan, a small mountain village faced the threat of bandits. To protect the autumn harvest, the village elder decided to request help from samurai to ensure the village's safety, but could only offer three meals of white rice a day as payment. In the city, they were met with disdain from the samurai and even got beaten up. Until the appearance of Kanbei (played by Kōji Shimizu), who has now become a ronin, after some consideration he finally agreed to help. He told the farmers that at least seven samurai were needed, so six others joined the group: Hisamatsu (played by Seiji Miyaguchi), Katsushiro (played by Isamu Kurogane), Gorō (played by Yoshio Inaba), Shichirō (played by Daisuke Katō), Heihachi (played by Minoru Chiaki), and Kikuchiyo (played by Toshiro Mifune). Together, the seven took on the task of defending the village. During the preparations for defense, there were many frictions and amusing incidents between the samurai and the farmers. In one surprise attack, a samurai was shot dead by a musket while trying to save a farmer. Soon afterwards, a fierce counterattack from the bandits ensued, and a brutal battle was about to begin.
