 Synopsis
This is Akira Kurosawa's representative work, produced after Japan's defeat in the war. It was initially censored and rejected by the occupying forces, and had its first screening after the signing of the peace treaty in 1952. The film is adapted from the Noh play 'Ataka' and its Kabuki adaptation 'Kanzan Chō', telling the story of Yoshitsune, Benkei, and others traversing the Ataka Pass after a warrant for arrest was issued by Minamoto no Yoritomo. Kurosawa fully utilized the character of Enoken, creating a talkative samurai who accompanies Yoshitsune and his seven attendants. The stark contrast between Benkei, played by Denjiro Oko, and the powerful Enoken makes this film unique. Enoken's light-hearted humor highlights the tragedy of those who are on the brink of extinction. The story is filled with poetic imagery, especially in the ending where Benkei appears drunk and the tears of Yoshitsune, who is left alone after awakening.
