The Grandmaster

Ip Man (played by Tony Leung), a man from Foshan, Guangdong, grew up in a well-off family. He learned martial arts from Chen Huashun, the third generation successor of Wing Chun. His master's advice of "One belt, one breath" supported him through the chaotic times of wars and changing dynasties. His wife, Zhang Yongcheng (played by Song Hye-kyo), is fierce and competent; they complement each other beautifully. In 1936, the martial arts world in Foshan was tumultuous. The master of Bagua, Gong Yutian (played by Wang Qingxiang), was getting old and promised to retire. His position as the president of the Chinese Martial Arts Association naturally attracted the attention and envy of martial arts masters. Among them were the master’s only daughter, Gong Er (played by Zhang Ziyi), Bai Yuanma San (played by Zhang Jin), the Demon of the East, Ding Lianshan (played by Zhao Benshan), and Wing Chun's Ip Man, all focusing their gaze on the righteous Gong Yutian. In martial arts, there are North and South styles; can the country be divided in the same way? Only those with the highest morals are fit for the important role of president, yet this fleeting worldly fame leads countless confused people to madly rush and waste their lives. Living in chaotic times, deep feelings for loved ones get buried in the heart, crushed into dust under the cold wheels of fate.
