In 1950s America, a young woman named Therese (played by Rooney Mara) works as a sales assistant in a department store in New York, yet longs to be a photographer. One day, a beautiful and elegant blonde woman named Carol (played by Cate Blanchett) comes to the store to buy Christmas gifts, and immediately sparks a connection with Therese. The title 'The Price of Salt' refers to the fact that in the 17th century, 'salt' had another meaning associated with female desire. In this context, it symbolizes the protagonists' situation: life without love is like meat without salt; so how much are you willing to pay for this love?
