Tongzi Mountain (played by Wan Siwei) is a young intellectual who is sent to a remote mountainous area in Jiangnan for re-education. The sudden turn of life leaves him disheartened, and his personality becomes gloomy and decadent. He nearly loses his life during a heavy labor task, but is saved by the pure and kind Lian Meizi. After that, Tongzi Mountain is assigned to serve as a substitute teacher at the more remote Pengjiawan Primary School, where Lian Meizi (played by He Qing) happens to work as a cook.
