In the noisy middle school campus, a group of high school students are busy with love and part-time jobs. The tall and handsome Brad (played by Judge Reinhold) is quite popular and is also an outstanding employee at a fast-food chain, but it seems that his relationship with his girlfriend has reached its end. Brad's sister, Stacy (played by Jennifer Jason Leigh), dreams of love and is eager to get close to young men at the urging of her friend Linda. Surfer guy Jeff (played by Sean Penn) spends his days on drugs in a stupor, driving the strict teachers to despair. While working part time at the same mall as Stacy, shy Rette wants to get closer to her but clumsily struggles. Rette's friend Mike prides himself on being a ladies' man, constantly giving Rette advice but ends up hooking up with Stacy instead. Stacy goes through a series of meaningless and chaotic relationships before finally noticing Rette's charming side. Meanwhile, after facing job loss, Brad finds it difficult to find a satisfying job. The summer nights are long, and the stories of these young people are both funny and slightly bittersweet.
