In 1941, when the Nazi iron heel was trampling on Poland, the Jewish cellist Kaya, her husband Yada who was a doctor, and their daughter fled from the city to a village. The village grocery store owner, Emmona, was willing to shelter them and asked Yada to pretend to be her husband who went to war, while Kaya and her daughter hid in the attic. Over time, Yada and Elena developed feelings for each other, which Kaya witnessed from the attic, but could only bear in silence... Outside was a chaotic era, while inside was a battle of desires. Ultimately, is this love triangle a true bond forged in adversity, a shadow of death, or a desire for survival?
