In May 1536, Anne Boleyn, Henry's second wife, and her five accomplices were executed. As the axe fell, Thomas Cromwell emerged from the bloody slaughter, continuing his ascent to power and wealth, while his formidable master, Henry, enjoyed a brief happiness with his third queen, Jane Seymour. Cromwell, a man reliant solely on his intellect, had no large family to support him nor a private army. During this brutal and bloody time, as he exercised power, Cromwell also confronted moral complexities, finding himself in a dilemma: the desire to do what was right on one hand, and the instinct for survival on the other. But after Henry VIII executed his queen, no one was safe. Despite domestic rebellions, traitors conspiring abroad, and the threat of invasion pushing Henry's regime to the brink of collapse, Cromwell's vivid imagination foresaw a new nation in the mirror of the future. All of England lay at his feet; the time for innovation and religious reform had come. Yet, as the wheel of fortune turned, Cromwell's enemies were gathering in the shadows. The inevitable question remained: how long could anyone survive under Henry's cruel and capricious gaze?
