Living a poor life, cowboy Jon (played by Jon Voight) comes to New York from his hometown to make a living. He considers himself charming and wants to work as a male prostitute in New York. On his first day in the city, he tries to pick up women on the street. However, being unfamiliar with the area, he fails to make any money and instead loses 20 dollars. Disheartened, Jon meets Rizzo (played by Dustin Hoffman), who survives by scamming people for small amounts of money. Rizzo tricks Jon into believing he knows the head of a male escort ring but requires a 20-dollar intermediary fee. Ultimately, Rizzo only introduces Jon to a gay pimp, which makes Jon furious, prompting him to confront Rizzo. Rizzo takes in the homeless Jon, and they gradually become close friends who share everything. During the cold winter in New York, they struggle to survive, so much so that they can’t afford food or clothes, and Rizzo also can’t buy medication for his illness. Rizzo dreams of life in Miami and invites Jon to join him in pursuing opportunities there. The two homeless men go to an underground bar that night to try their luck, and when Jon finally secures a deal, Rizzo falls down the stairs, physically exhausted. As he lies there, Rizzo's mind is preoccupied with the sun of his hometown in Miami, and to fulfill his friend's wish, Jon starts to take risks.
