Julio (played by Gael García Bernal), a young man from a well-off family in Mexico, and his best friend Teno (played by Diego Luna), are feeling frustrated after their energetic girlfriends go on a trip abroad, leaving them to kill time during a long, boring summer. At a party at Teno's house attended by the president, the two meet Teno's cousin's Spanish wife, Luisa, and they pitch her a trip to a legendary beach known as 'Heaven's Gate.' Days later, Luisa, heartbroken over her husband's infidelity, calls Teno asking to join the beach trip. The three immediately set off, and on the way, Luisa discusses everything with the two boys, eventually having affairs with both Teno and Julio, leading to a rift in Julio and Teno's friendship. They are enraged when they discover that their girlfriends had cheated with each other but still make it to Heaven's Gate. After that summer, some memories of youth remain forever on that beach...
