Charlie (played by Tom Cruise) learns that his father has passed away, leaving behind an inheritance of 3 million dollars. However, to his surprise, the entire inheritance goes to a brother he doesn't even know, Raymond (played by Dustin Hoffman). Charlie has never heard of Raymond, and this revelation infuriates him. He decides to seek out his brother. To his shock, he discovers that Raymond lives in a mental hospital because he has suffered from autism since childhood; after their mother died, he was placed there for treatment. Charlie devises a plan to take Raymond out of the mental hospital, intending to trick him into surrendering the inheritance. Raymond has unusual habits and lives in his own fantasy world, exhibiting many strange behaviors. Through their time together, Charlie discovers Raymond's astonishing memory ability. He tries to use his brother's photographic memory skills to test his luck at a casino, and he wins a huge sum of money, enough for Charlie to escape his life of poverty. But what Charlie gains the most is the slowly warming bond of brotherly love, which far surpasses his initial scheme for the 3 million dollar inheritance.
