The story takes place in Paris in 1895. Pierre (played by Niels Schneider) is a free-spirited poet and a notorious playboy. Henry (played by Benjamin Lavernhe) is Pierre's friend, and they both study poetry under their mentor Hedelia (played by Amira Casar). Hedelia has a lovely daughter named Maria (played by Noémie Merlant), and both Pierre and Henry fall madly in love with her. Although Maria deeply loves Pierre in her heart, she ultimately marries Henry due to financial pressure. Heartbroken, Pierre decides to leave his sorrow behind and goes to Algeria, where he meets a woman named Zohra (played by Camélia Jordana). Although Zohra is beautiful and gentle, Pierre cannot forget Maria.
