Nigel (played by Hugh Grant) is caught in a seven-year itch of marriage. He and his wife Fiona (played by Kristin Scott Thomas) decide to take a cruise to India to try to change their troubled relationship. On the ship, he meets the paralyzed writer Oscar (played by Peter Coyote) and his beautiful wife Mimi (played by Emmanuelle Seigner). Oscar seems intent on revealing the unusual relationship he has with Mimi to the stranger Nigel. When Oscar first met Mimi, they were madly in love, their passion burning bright. However, Mimi's captivating charm only captivated Oscar for a brief period. He soon grew tired of her, and despite Mimi's sacrifices for him, including an abortion and hysterectomy, Oscar cruelly sent her away. After a car accident, Oscar finds himself in a hospital bed, only to discover Mimi standing beside him, furious, dragging him out of the bed, leaving Oscar permanently disabled. They continue to live together. Mimi never stops abusing Oscar, yet the two still love each other. When Mimi meets Fiona, a miraculous spark ignites in her heart, leading them to dance together. In the end, however, Oscar pulls the trigger on Mimi.
