In the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, warlords rose up, and conflicts were constant. After a great battle, the Qing king Tong Taiming got separated from his seven-year-old daughter, Tong Lingyu. She wandered to the Ayutthaya Kingdom (modern-day Thailand), where she was taken in by the Muay Thai master Asang, who accepted her as a disciple and taught her Muay Thai every day. At that time in the Ayutthaya Kingdom, local customs included not wearing shoes, and influenced by the Muay Thai master's wishes to enhance her foot strength, she learned various martial arts skills such as footwork and agility. The locals referred to her as 'Flying Legs'. Eleven years later, General Chen Yunhai, the most loyal subordinate of King Tong Taiming, found the now-grown and beautiful Lingyu, fulfilling his dying wish, and brought her back to the Qing palace along with Asang. As the king's orphan, Lingyu received great favor upon her return, especially from the Empress Dowager, who personally conferred the title 'He Shuo Ge Ge' upon her and granted her the Feifeng Palace for residence. Having lived on the outside for years, Lingyu struggled to adapt to the customs of the palace and clashed frequently with the Empress and various consorts. They mocked her for her large feet, jokingly calling her 'Princess out of the mountains.' Only the Twelfth Prince had a close relationship with Lingyu, and a budding romance developed between them. Even with the Empress Dowager's protection, Lingyu often found herself in conflict within the inner court, especially with the favored Xiangyang Ge Ge. At one point, because of Lingyu, both the Empress and Xiangyang lost the favor of the Empress Dowager and Emperor Shunzhi. Eventually, Lingyu caused chaos and seriously injured Xiangyang Ge Ge in an altercation. Realizing the severity of her actions, Lingyu, with the help of Asang and a few close eunuchs and palace maids, evaded the palace guards' pursuit and escaped the palace that very night.
