The secret manual of martial arts, "The Sunflower Manual," was stolen from the Imperial Treasury. The supervisor of the Eastern Factory, eunuch Gu Jinfu (played by Liu Xun), leads Captain Ouyang Quan (played by Jacky Cheung) and others south to investigate Lin Zhen Nan, a resigning brocade-clad guard, while also enlisting the help of the "Lord of the Five Mountains," Zuo Lengchan (played by Yuan Hua), to assist from the periphery. Linghu Chong (played by Leslie Cheung), the top disciple of Huashan Sect, and his junior sister Yue Ling Shan (played by Yee Tong) are ordered by their master to support Lin Zhen Nan. Unfortunately, both are not strong enough; after receiving Lin Zhen Nan's last will, they flee. On their journey, they encounter Liu Zhengfeng (played by Wu Ma), the leader of the Shunfeng Hall, and Qu Yang (played by Lam Ching Ying), an elder of the Sun-Moon God Sect, as well as Feng Qingyang from Huashan Sect, who impart the music score of "The Smiling, Proud Wanderer" and the Dugu Nine Swords. Various factions converge in Miao Ren's territory for the "Sunflower Manual." Ouyang Quan and Zuo Lengchan compete for credit, leading them to disguise as Lin Pingzhi to infiltrate the Huashan Sect. Linghu Chong meets Ren Yingying (played by Brigitte Lin) and Lan Fenghuang (played by Yuen Qiu) from the Sun-Moon God Sect, and, due to his relationship with Qu Yang, receives their assistance. Gu Jinfu and Yue Buqun engage in a fierce battle over the "Sunflower Manual," and Linghu Chong, unable to bear the harm that might come to his brothers, uses the Dugu Nine Swords in anger, beginning to understand the true meaning of "The Smiling, Proud Wanderer."
