The film is adapted from the world-renowned Belgian French detective novelist Georges Simenon (December 12, 1903 – September 4, 1989), published in 1933 in the detective novel "The Engagement of Monsieur Hire" (Les Fiançailles de M. Hire). Old tailor Monsieur Hire (played by Michel Blanc) is usually taciturn and lives alone in an apartment. One day, the 22-year-old neighbor girl Pierrette Bourgeois (played by Miu Miu) is brutally murdered in the bushes. The reclusive old bachelor Hire becomes the prime suspect in everyone's eyes, while the real murderer is a young man named Emile (played by Luc Tilly). Monsieur Hire knows the truth, but he does not expose Emile nor makes any defense, because he deeply loves Emile's girlfriend Alice (played by Sandrine Bonnaire) and fears that Emile's murder case will implicate her. When the truth of the murder is revealed, Monsieur Hire uses every means to prepare to escape with Alice, but Alice, in an effort to save Emile, frames Hire.
