U.S. Air Force pilot Captain Colter Stevens (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) on a mission in Afghanistan suddenly awakens to find himself on a high-speed train, sitting next to a stranger, a woman named Christina (played by Michelle Monaghan), who is speaking to him. Colter is confused about how he ended up on this train, and he realizes he is existing in the identity of another person. Just as he is trying to make sense of the situation, an explosion occurs on the train... Colter wakes up again, finding himself in a sealed space capsule, where a female officer, Goodwin (played by Vera Farmiga), is communicating with him via video and asking him to report what happened on the train. Still bewildered and unsure of what is happening, Colter is sent back to that train once more. After this time, Colter finally understands that he is on a mission to investigate a train bombing in Chicago, to locate the terrorist and uncover the next target. Colter is sent back to that high-speed train over and over again, with only eight minutes each time...
