Drew (played by Orlando Bloom) has hit rock bottom in his life, causing his company to suffer losses of hundreds of millions, and he cannot escape the fate of being fired by his boss and dumped by his girlfriend. A ringing phone interrupts his suicide attempts — the news of his father’s death brings Drew an urgent task; he must quickly return to the distant town of Elizabeth to handle the aftermath. Thus, what follows resembles a series of wonderful metaphors, allowing Drew to see hope again from the depths. He meets flight attendant Claire (played by Kirsten Dunst) on the plane; she is beautiful, charming, and understanding, always providing comfort to Drew during his loneliest and lowest moments. Meanwhile, Drew’s mother, though always a bit neurotic, infects him with her enthusiasm and optimism for life. With the warmth of love and family, Drew gradually regains his confidence in life, which becomes more robust, leading him out of his life’s low point.
