The artist known by the stage name 'Veneno' (poison), Cristina Ortiz, was one of the most famous transgender television personalities and LGBT icons in Spain during the 1990s. She realized her gender identity during her childhood, but this led to years of discrimination and attacks in her hometown. In 1992, at the age of 28, Cristina moved to Madrid to seek a new life and soon began her gender transition. In 1996, the well-known television host Pepe Navarro was looking for new topics for his late-night show 'Esta Noche Cruzamos el Mississippi,' and Cristina, who was then working as a prostitute in a western Madrid park, was discovered by Navarro's team due to her outstanding appearance, unique way of speaking, and candid personality, catapulting her to fame overnight. However, various tragedies followed in the years to come. 'Veneno' Cristina published her personal memoir in October 2016, dictated by her and documented by transgender author Valeria Vegas. Just a month after its publication, Cristina sadly passed away at home. Based on this memoir, real footage, and other people's accounts, Los Javis brought a much-anticipated Spanish biopic series 'Veneno' in 2020.
