Comedy star Chris Rock is the eldest of three brothers, growing up in the Brooklyn area of New York City in the 1980s. Chris (played by Tyler James Williams) relocates to a new neighborhood as his strict and hardworking parents rent a car to drop him off at a predominately white middle school, two hours away from their former home. As he struggles to find his place while trying to stay connected with his brothers back home, he also worries about getting into high school. The new sitcom on UPN, 'Everybody Hates Chris', portrays the unique and funny story of this resilient young man and his daily tribulations. In 1982, Chris is 13 years old, carrying the cool fantasies common to teenagers, only to find that his adolescent life is far from simple or wonderful. Moving from his hometown to the tough Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, Chris hasn't shed his role as the big brother. While his parents work, he steps in as the temporary head of the household, taking care of his younger brother Drew (Tequan Richmond), who is taller and more like an older brother, and his little sister Tonya (Imani Hakim). Their resilient and frugal father Julius (Terry Crews) juggles several jobs to support the family. Meanwhile, their strict and energetic mother Rochelle (Tichina Arnold) works part-time at a small real estate company, demanding the best from her children. Chris's mom decides to send him to a good school, so he has to endure a long commute every day to Corleone Junior High in the South Shore neighborhood. Although he quickly becomes a target for bullying, Chris's inherent charm and wit help him make some new friends, such as Greg (Vincent Martel), a smart and non-confrontational good kid. When Chris Rock's sharp edge backfires on him, he realizes something his family has long known: he needs to change his sharp nature. But first, he must think, talk, or grapple with one growing experience after another.
