The French gentleman Madio (played by Fernando Rey) is on a train returning to his country from Spain. In the carriage, he encounters a mother and daughter, a dwarf, and a friend of his younger brother. Just before the train departs, a woman (played by Molina Angela) rushes in with luggage, and Madio throws a bucket of cold water on her, leaving everyone quite puzzled. After returning to the carriage, Madio recounts his experiences to the others: this woman turns out to be Conchita, the Spanish maid from his brother's home (played by Carole Bouquet). Her beauty deeply captivates Madio. In order to express his love, he supports Conchita and her mother to escape financial difficulties and then proposes that she become his lover. Although Conchita responds with ambivalence, she never agrees to his sexual advances. This infuriates him, especially when he discovers that the woman who claims to be a virgin has another lover, enraging him even more...In this film, Spanish director Buñuel uses two actresses to portray the same character, which is quite symbolic.
