In the ninth year of the Taisho era, a young man dressed in a bathrobe (played by Matsuda Yoji) wakes up in a dimly lit, closed room, while the cries of a girl can be heard from next door. He has lost his memory and cannot recall his name or origins. At this moment, a man named Wakabayashi Kyotaro (played by Muroma Hidemasa), who claims to be a professor of psychiatry at Kyushu Imperial University, enters the room. He tells the young man a tragic story that happened long ago in China and believes that the memories of ancient ancestors have somehow been passed down to this young man named Wu Yilang. The previous director of the psychiatric hospital, Masaki (played by Katsura Shijaku), had conducted in-depth research on this.
