During a hunting expedition to track the stone dragon, Hou Yi, along with disciples from the Hunter's Gate, acted recklessly due to his arrogance, resulting in the stone dragon's transformation and the disaster of nine suns in the sky. Unable to bear the fact that his father died because of him, Hou Yi chose to retreat to Sanjing Village, leading a life of dullness and drowning his sorrows in alcohol. His fiancée, Chang'e, disregarded her master's opposition and stayed by his side, encouraging him daily, but to no avail. The new leader of the Hunter's Gate, Peng Meng, sought the sun-shooting divine bow with the help of Master Xuangong to shoot down eight suns on the day when three stars aligned, wishing to gain fame for himself. Master Xuangong saw through Peng Meng's evil intentions. On the day of Peng Meng's forced wedding to Chang'e, Hou Yi stormed the celebration, discovering that he was the one with the Heavenly Dragon vein capable of wielding the divine bow. Thus, he willingly helped Hou Yi awaken the power to shoot the sun, restoring the strength of his right arm. Chang'e took risks to assist Hou Yi in overcoming himself, initially intending to use Master Xuangong's Jianghu order to coerce Peng Meng into handing over the divine bow. However, Peng Meng had already prepared for this and cunningly presented the bow, having tampered with it beforehand. On the day of the celestial alignment, when Hou Yi activated the divine bow, he fell victim to an illusion created by magic powder, leading to chaos and suffering. Doubting himself once more, Hou Yi fell into deep despair. Peng Meng, having a justifiable reason, demanded the bow back, citing Hou Yi's misfortune in shooting the suns.
