Police detective Mike (played by Louis Koo) and Ah Ren (played by Johnnie To) are a pair of partners and good brothers. One is withdrawn and taciturn, while the other is cynical and disenchanted, neither of whom is appreciated by their superiors. To apprehend the robbery gang 'Poison Dragon', they set up surveillance in the home of an elderly woman (played by Lo Lan). During this time, Mike, who grew up in an orphanage, meets Jennifer (played by Lam Mei Cheng), a pregnant woman abandoned by her boyfriend, and expresses his willingness to be the father of her child. Ah Ren also meets a beautiful girl, Ah Yen (played by Cheng Suet Yee). Soon, Mike learns that he is suffering from a terminal illness and has little time left. In order to secure a better future for Jennifer, he secretly trades with 'Poison Dragon' to obtain a large sum of money. At the same time, he does not forget his duties and informs Ah Ren about 'Poison Dragon's' whereabouts, engaging in a struggle against them together.
