Ethan (Tom Cruise) was once a secret agent working in a special department, but after a beautiful woman named Julia (Michelle Monaghan) came into his life, he decided to retire and return to a normal life. Unfortunately, the good times did not last long; not long after beginning his happy life, Ethan received word that his protégé Lindsay (Keri Russell) had been kidnapped by his archenemy Davian (Philip Seymour Hoffman). Davian is cold and ruthless, and Lindsay's capture puts her in grave danger. To rescue Lindsay, Ethan returns to his old profession, organizing a skilled team of agents to launch an attack on their target.
