The story takes place in a misty, fantastical city, where the mad doctor Grégoire (played by Daniel Emilfork) is tormented by his inability to dream. In his anguish, he instructs his clone (played by Dominique Pinon) to kidnap the children in the city and use a strange machine to steal their dreams. However, all the beautiful dreams that come to him turn into nightmares. A giant and strong man named Ayo (played by Ron Perlman) has a younger brother who is kidnapped by the mad doctor. To save his brother, the kind-hearted Ayo teams up with Méli (played by Judith Vittet), a member of a group of orphan thieves, to engage in a battle of wits and strength against the mad doctor. Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet uses his unique and imaginative vision to construct a glamorous dreamscape that is a mix of good and evil, yet ultimately filled with kindness.
