In order to promote national righteousness, the martial hero Chen Zhen (played by Donnie Yen) killed a Japanese martial arts master at the Hongkou dojo in Shanghai. After this, he changed his name, left his hometown, and went to work in France. After World War I, Chen Zhen, under the alias Qi Tianyuan, returned to his long-lost homeland and met Shanghai tycoon Liu Yutian (played by Anthony Wong) and the glamorous nightclub hostess KIKI (played by Shu Qi) as a businessman. Liu is arrogant and profits from the war, but he still retains some Chinese spirit; KIKI appears innocent but is, in fact, a Japanese spy infiltrating the nightclub to gather intelligence.
