The plot describes the character of a young miner named Paul, who is quiet and sensitive. His mother, Gertrude, who has an unhappy relationship with her often-drunk husband, turns to her son for emotional support, a bond that exceeds normal maternal love. This situation affects Paul's relationship with his girlfriend, Millian, who is influenced by her family's strict religious beliefs and seeks only a spiritual romance while rejecting physical passion. In order to break free from his mother's control and the emotional blow from his girlfriend, Paul throws himself into an affair with Clara, a female worker separated from her husband, but soon he realizes that they lack communication on a spiritual level. In the end, Paul abandons the monotonous coal mining town and ventures into the world in a new place.
