Synopsis

In 1949, the Pacific War had ended, and Freddy Quell (played by Joaquin Phoenix), troubled by the boredom of army life, finally returned to the United States. However, the mental therapy he received prior to his return home did not help him in any practical way, and Freddy became trapped in a dazed and monotonous life experience. The following year, after experiencing a series of job failures, Freddy met the complex 'Master' Lancaster Dodd (played by Philip Seymour Hoffman) on a passenger ship that he boarded while drunk. Dodd's spiritual therapy, based on a theory of time, piqued Freddy's interest. Lured by Dodd, Freddy attempted to open up and seek solutions to his problems, becoming increasingly involved in Dodd's loosely organized 'Cause,' rallying for him and attacking dissenters. Throughout the 'therapy' process, the relationship between Freddy and Dodd became increasingly complicated, with patterns of coming together and falling apart.
