 Synopsis
The story takes place in 1950s England, where Lydia (played by Holliday Grainger) is a very ordinary housewife living there. After being ruthlessly abandoned by her husband, Lydia reluctantly starts a struggling life with her son Charlie. Due to family issues, Charlie suffers from bullying at school, and the mother and son often find themselves in dire situations. Just when they are at their most desperate, a doctor named Jan (played by Anna Paquin) moves in next door to Lydia. Jan is gentle and kind, she not only heals Charlie's wounds but also opens her home to them when Lydia and Charlie are on the brink of homelessness. Thus, Lydia begins to stay in Jan's house, and over time, a different kind of feeling develops between them, while gossip about the two spreads wildly in the small village.
