The story takes place in late 19th century Sichuan, where Zheng Megu (played by Xu Qing), born in a rural area, marries Cai Xingshun, the owner of a grocery store, and becomes the grocery store owner’s wife. Cai Xingshun is honest and dull, completely lacking in charm, whereas Zheng Megu possesses stunning beauty, which immediately attracts gossip upon her marriage. Fortunately, Cai Xingshun has a respected cousin, Luo Desheng (played by You Yong), who always steps in to protect Zheng Megu whenever someone tries to bully her. Over time, an inappropriate relationship develops between Zheng Megu and Luo Desheng. Luo Desheng has been away from home for several years and brings back Liu Sanjin (played by Cheng Xi), a courtesan who wishes to reform. Utilizing Liu Sanjin's beauty, he drains the resources of a grain merchant, Gu Tiancheng (played by Zhao Jun), and it is Liu Sanjin's appearance that prompts Zheng Megu and Luo Desheng to decide to no longer suppress their feelings for each other.
