 Synopsis
As early as December 2010, Anderson intended to adapt Thomas Pynchon's "The Inherent Vice", but due to the earlier funding of another new film, "The Master", "The Inherent Vice" was temporarily shelved. "The Inherent Vice" has a shell reminiscent of Chandler's detective novels, where Los Angeles private detective Doc unexpectedly runs into his ex-girlfriend Shasta, and hears from her an unsubstantiated story about a bizarre kidnapping case, the victim—her current lover—is a "wealthy billion-dollar" real estate mogul. Doc knows full well that "love" is a vague term that can lead to a string of troubles, yet he unwittingly gets caught up in Shasta's story, and the situation complicates further, with surfers, pimps, drug dealers, rock musicians, and usurers who have committed murder, all mixed in and flickering in and out...
